Curriculum Vitae: Joint Commissioner (ACAD) Retd., KVS and Former Director (ACAD), CBSE

INTRODUCTION

Having retired as the Joint Commissioner (Academics), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (HQS), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, at the end of a 32-year service that included tenure of Director (Academics) in CBSE for four years, the experience in the field of education in respect of Mrs. Chithralekha Gurumurthy is multi-faceted.


Having risen in the career from a teacher of mathematics to an administrator in a time span of 32 continuous years in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in addition to a three-year spell as a teacher prior to it, the potential acquired is of immense value since much of it has been the result of a process of self-actualization and broadening horizons. Working in different parts of the country and abroad is an important value addition to the professional profile. As the head of different regions from Kolkatta in the east, Chennai and Bangalore in the South, Patna and Delhi in the north visited about 200 schools ranging from Gangtok to Port Blair and Car Nicobar and Goa to Kavaratti, Gorakhpur to Kanyakumari (Vijaya Narayanam). As a Principal of schools Andhra, Gujarat and Kathmandu were also covered.


CBSE

The 32 years educational experience also includes a fruitful tenure of four years in the CBSE as Director (Academics) on deputation. This enabled being at the helm of affairs in several policy decisions, giving exposure at national and international levels, wider platform for interaction with eminent educationists of parallel concerns. This period was one of confirming the realization through field experiences giving the conviction to disseminate and empower.


DETAILS OF FOREIGN ASSIGNMENTS/VISITS

Had a foreign tenure as Principal, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Visited schools in Doha, Qatar and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia for inspection of schools that had applied for affiliation.

In Jubail addressed the parents on various issues.

The French Embassy sponsored a week long official tour of Paris to have a direct insight into their system of education, various initiatives of international importance.


EDIFY EXPERIENCE

After retirement I served in MDN Edify Education, a private limited company for about one and a half years as their Chief Academic Officer.

The company gives franchise to schools across the country and has about 16 K-12 schools and 35 kids’ schools across India. As a Chief Academic Officer I was entrusted with all services related to Academics in the schools. The curriculum adopted comprises basically the NCERT/CBSE syllabus transacted through a pedagogy evolved by adopting the best global practices. While working on this the following have been achieved:

  • Gain an insight into the PYP inquiry model adopted by IB.

  • Draw comparisons and align with our educational principles as documented in NCF 2005.

  • Work out an extension to middle schools that ensures smooth transition to the secondary levels prescribed by any educational board.

  • Conceptualizing and authoring books for international kindergarten at three levels.

  • Editing existing books.

Apart from these, extensive contributions to material generation, creating Standard operating procedures, conducting teacher empowerment programs and many more have been undertaken.


OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

Academic/Training:

  • Being Key resource person for the primary strengthening, developed tools for primary syllabus centred on vertical and horizontal integration of curriculum that paved the way for progressive depth level in a single discipline as well as inter-disciplinary approach to pedagogy.

  • Participated in workshops for imparting training in continuous and comprehensive evaluation, and generation of good multiple choice questions in mathematics.

  • Participated in seminars in ICT and use of open sources and introduced curricular changes in the subject of Informatics Practices at senior school level and Information technology at secondary level.

  • Developed evaluation tool for competency-based evaluation that envisages question paper which is less information seeking and more directed to assess learning stages of a concept or attaining a competency.

  • Developed advanced study material for classes IX to XII Mathematics with a value addition to the text book that helped in concept appreciation as well as meet the requirements of higher order thinking skills needed in All India Entrance Examinations. This was uploaded to SAKSHAT – one-stop education portal under the aegis of MHRD.

  • Six video lectures in XII class calculus were recorded and uploaded to SAKSHAT.

  • Mind-mapping in problem-solving through exemplar questions appearing in IIT entrance examination and uploaded to SAKSHAT.

  • Contributed in Cenbosec, a quarterly journal published by CBSE, articles entitled Primary Mathematics in Secondary Perspective, Quality Teaching in Mathematics, The Constructivist Teacher, Learn your Subjects the Play Way; in a school magazine called KALVI MALAR wrote on “education for Living or education for Life” and about Computer-aided learning in CTSA Journal.

  • Experienced in conducting workshops, in-service training programmes, orientation programs for Principals.

  • As Director (Academics) CBSE, involved in all curriculum- and examination-related matters.

  • Had the privilege of being a member of Advisory committees of National Institute of Open Schooling, Delhi Directorate of Education, etc. Member of two high-level committees constituted by KVS under the chairmanship of Director NCERT, one for drawing a road map for implementing NCF2005 in KVS & the other to consider bringing pre-primary in the main fold of school education.

  • Member of Text Book Development committee of NCERT for Computer Science and for Mathematics in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).

  • Participated in seminars and conferences, chaired panel sessions, made presentations on Quality Education, Constructivism, Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), Value Education, Challenges in Education, etc.

  • Contributed to material development and training in formative assessments in Algebra and Geometry in the process of CCE.
